In my mission to turn our home into the North Pole for the Christmas season, I decided to give our dining room a snowy makeover and turn it into the Land of the Snowflakes. With all the holiday chaos going on, I wanted to keep things simple but still add that festive, wintery vibe. Think easy decor that still makes a big impact—because let’s be honest, as a mom, we need all the holiday magic without spending hours setting it up! Here’s how I turned our dining room into a cozy, snowy escape in no time.
TURNING MY HOUSE INTO THE NORTH POLE:
LAND OF THE SNOWFLAKES
I’ve been seeing those beautiful paper bag snowflakes all over the internet, and I thought, “Okay, I’ve got to try this!” It seemed like the perfect simple, budget-friendly craft to add some holiday cheer to our home without taking up too much time (because, let’s be real, who has hours to spare during the holiday season?). So I decided to make my own—and it turned out to be so easy and pretty, I had to share how I did it!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
Paper bags (make sure they are white!)
Hot glue gun
Scissors
A hole punch (optional, but adds a cute touch)
Clear glitter sealer spray (just a little to give it a frosty shine)
Fishing line or string (for hanging)
Command ceiling hooks (I keep these up year-round for all my holiday decor!)
STEP 1: GLUE THE PAPER BAGS TOGETHER AND CUT YOUR PATTERN
Start by taking two paper bags and gluing them together with your hot glue gun. Once they’re stuck together, grab your scissors and start cutting out your snowflake design. You can keep it simple, or get fancy with it—totally up to you!
STEP 2: RINSE AND REPEAT!
Once you’ve cut out the template, grab two more paper bags and glue them to the first set. Depending on how thick your paper bags are, you could probably glue more together at once, but I stuck to two layers for the cleanest result. Then cut along your template lines. Keep doing that until you have 8 bags cut and glued together! See my video for any questions you may have - I show you how to do this step-by-step!
Here’s the best tip I can give you—trust the process! It might look a little messy or hard to picture at first, but once you glue the ends together, you’ll see the snowflake shape form. Seriously, it’s like magic! Don’t get discouraged if it’s not perfect at first. It always comes together at the end.
STEP 3: FINISHING TOUCHES
If you want to take it up a notch, use a hole punch to add little details along the edges of your snowflake. It’s a small step but makes a big difference! Then, spray on a little clear glitter sealer (optional, but it gives the snowflakes a pretty, frosty shine without being too glittery).
STEP 4: HANG THEM UP!
Now comes the fun part—hanging your snowflakes! I used fishing line to tie them, and hung them from the ceiling using Command hooks (honestly, I keep these up year-round for all my seasonal decorations). I spaced them out at different lengths, and the clear fishing wire makes it look like they are floating in mid-air! It gives our dining room this completely magical, wintery, North Pole vibe!
Once they were all hung up, I couldn’t believe how cute they looked! These paper bag snowflakes ended up being the perfect touch to make our home feel like a cozy, snowy wonderland. The best part? It took hardly any time, and the kids loved helping out with the cutting and hanging (I mean, they are snowflakes, so they’re perfect for little hands!).
So if you’re looking for a simple, stress-free way to add some holiday sparkle to your home, these DIY paper bag snowflakes are a total mom hack. You’ll love how they turn out, and they’re a great project for the whole family to get involved in!
